The Customer
Our customer is a global leader in information lifecycle management
solutions, based in the USA.
The Challenge
The customer needed a wide gamut of 24x7 global support services
that included Remote Unix and DBA Support. The organization's multiple
databases served several mission critical applications running on
UNIX systems. The challenge was to create an automated solution
that would proactively monitor the databases during overnight batch
processing and generate reports on threshold parameters.
The Solution
We set up a skilled team with wide experience in DBA/ UNIX. Here's
a snapshot of how the project progressed:
A web-based application was developed to capture information from
the databases and store them in a master Oracle database. Intelligent
scripts were used to store information about ongoing database activities.
Once the information was in place, the workflow for DBA monitoring
and other activities was defined. The workflow covered Email, Database
and Application checks as well as all ongoing DBA activities.
A proactive automated administration procedure was established.
This included:
- Population of databases from external sources.
- Maintenance of database logs.
- Creation and maintenance of users with appropriate access restrictions
- Monitoring and managing rollback segments
- Maintaining control files
- Creating snapshots for better performance
- Tuning databases for more efficient operations
- Backup and recovery procedures
- MIS report generation, including Trends, Tuning, Exceptions,
Capacity Planning
